These riots against Europe do not represent the first time that the Freedom of Expression has been challenged by Islamists. Author Salman Rushdie was sentenced to death by the Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini and his book 'The Satanic Verses' was banned throughout the Muslim world. February 14th is the 17th anniversary of the Fatwa calling for the death of the author.
Ummm...Happy Anniversary?
Rushdie apologized for his work, just like the Danish newspaper (Jyllands-Posten) has done, but to no avail. Islamists couldn't touch Rushdie, who received protection from the English government, so they attacked those who supported him.
According to Wikipedia, "In 1991, Rushdie's Japanese translator, Hitoshi Igarashi, was stabbed and killed at the university where he taught in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, north of Tokyo, and his Italian translator was beaten and stabbed in Milan. In 1993, Rushdie's Norwegian publisher William Nygaard was shot and severely injured in an attack outside his house in Oslo. Thirty-seven people died when their hotel in Sivas, Turkey was burnt down by locals protesting against Aziz Nesin, Rushdie's Turkish translator." ...And Leftists accuse the US of censorship and attacking free speech. This is the real thing.
In January 2004 Islamists were outraged that Rushdie dared to visit his Indian homeland. A Muslim cleric told reporters, "The writer is a 'white collared terrorist' and the government should respect our feelings by sending him out of the country". Don't Islamists accuse the US of being the world's number one terrorist? How come Islamists call everyone a terrorist except for terrorists?
Throughout the world Islamists predominately display protest signs in English in order to appeal to the traditional sympathy that they receive from Western Liberals and as an effective means of intimidation. This protester displays her sign in Kenya where a mob tried to attack the home of the Danish envoy, but were stopped after clashes with riot police. Could Islamists be losing support in the West?

Happy VDay FN:
Good post. You always bring stuff up that others have forgotten about. I have been waiting to hear another blogger bring up the Satanic verses as a good example for the intolerance that exists for dissension, in the Muslim world. Sad but true. Thanks for keeping us honest:)
he is wonderful, mahndisa.
fern, happy anniversary sounds much better than happy v.d.! dontcha know?
Happy Valentines Day Mahndisa & Nanc.
Dont worry about Rushdie. Valentines Day may be the Anniversary of the Fatwa calling for his death, but he also gets to spend the occasion with his gorgeous wife, Indian model and actress Padma Lakshmi!!!
What a babe!
thank you fern - your lusty slip is showing! we don't do valentine's day here - and that's because EVERYDAY is treated as the last day. i am so fortunate to have a family who loves me unconditionally - well, what choice to they have? haaaa!
time for your daily dose of anger:

on a happier note - saddam is on a hunger strike...
Oh my, that article is gonna get me worked up. I dont have time to read it right now, but I can tell it wont be pretty when I get the chance to sit down and absorb this outrage.
I fixed the link in the post. It was originally copied from another post but I forgot to insert the URL (the web page address).
Sorry
i'll stand back then - i have enough anger of my own without getting any of yours on me! and you have no thing to be sorry for - you have a great day at work and leave this behind for now - there'll be more when you get back - it's neverending i tell you, neverending!
I have so many ideas for blogging and so little time.
A bunch of articles have been on hold for months. Then there is so much going on that I have to address these issues.
Things are going very badly for Leftists and Islamists. The stake has been driven through their hearts.
With the Iraqi elections, the Saddam Hussein trial, the Middle Eastern War against the Shia in Pakistan and Iraq, the Cartoon riots, the French riots, the Palestinian kidnappings of foreigners, Palestinian attacks on Egypt, Syrian/Hezbollah attacks on Lebanon - all come together with the usual terrorism to write a true story of the problem with Islamic bully tactics and their propensity for bloodshed.
the news isn't going to go away. it will always be there awaiting your next great idea. don't be so hard on yourself - you do have the best site for the eyes and mind. and you just keep getting better and better as the evil becomes more and more obvious. just do what you have time for. you know, until they start making a 30 hour day! you are even cooler than the other side of the pillow - and i don't say that very often!
p.s. fern, this is one of the sites i go to get much news in one publication, most articles are free, but the top ones are subscription - usually the subscription articles may be found elsewhere - if you ever need to know where, just ask me:
http://www.watch.org/index.html?mcat=1
In the one photo, the person essentially declared themself a terrorist (like we needed the clue).
But if they believe "freedom of expression is western terrorism" ...well, they were using their freedom of expression in holding up the sign, so they are a terrorist. Hope you follow my logic.
mdc - the only people who cannot because they refuse not - are the leftwing lunarticks. simplicity does not compute with them - it must be made complex and then they don't even get it!
This is a great blog! Freedomnow, do you know what exactly Rushdie's book said that caused such a reaction from the extremist islams? I am not familiar with the book and anything you tell me about it would be helpful. Thanks!
adam g - i took the pleasure of looking this up - a very short bio on rushdie:
http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/rushdie.htm
seeing as how i am the official librarian of sorts...
morning to you fern - it looks to be a stormy day here in ark - hoping so - no, today is not the day i start my baby steps out the door job. have a day!
Adam
Thanks for visiting. The Satanic Verses is a novel about two Indian immigrants to England. What angers Muslims is that the characters relate stories about Mohammad in very untraditional and imaginative terms (sacrilege).
Even worse, he created a fictional prophet called Mahound (an old derogatory term for Mohammad). He uses this character to ridicule fundamental interpretations of Islam.
If you decide to read the book you can use the link below as a study guide.

Hey Nanc,
Good luck with yer new job.
Whadda ya mean by, "official librarian OF SORTS..."? You are either with us or against us!
That was a good link because most info on the web is copied from each other and that link had a lot of unique facts about him.
Cheers
wow - you say good luck on the new job AND cheers in the same post? i'm not going off to tend bar! and i am with you, but who will do the librarian work on the day i cannot be here? oh, the ennui...
Your boss will understand that you have certain obligations to society that do not involve bartending.
Satanic Verses was a bore seriously.
Intimidation is not freedom of speech. Identity theft is not freedom of speech either.
I deleted the fake John Brown until he changes his name.
hmmm - i wonder who he'll come back as? because carol_bullshipperlookinforadate is back at autonomist and i'm wondering if they're related beak.
fern, tomorrow is THE day - i must go do my duty. remember, it's only one day per week - i'll be back by evening - not to worry.
before i go - ann coulter has an article about kissing muslim butt or something like that today - not kissing muslim butt today - but today there is an article by ann coulter at fpm entitled "muslim bites dog" regarding kissing muslim butts - you know what i meant...
Beak,
Someone (I cant remember who) noted that the real John Brown was a right wing religious extremist - something that scares liberals today. I thought that was quite an ironic observation considering that Democrats back then were in appeasement mode as well. In this case they cuddled up with slave owners...Oh the irony.
Nanc,
Have a good day at work dearie. Dont forget to brush.
thank you, fern - i had a great day at work! i never forget to brush and even brushed after lunch - these five and a half hour days are going to kill me...
we are having a storm! stuff blowin' around kind of storm - gotta go - cat's blowing by the window storm!
fern - i posted a song by devo at the pelosi article at autonomist - i hope i wasn't breaking any infringements you may have on the tune - if so, take it out of my librarian pay!
the op/ed piece of the day:
http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20060215-094730-3814r.htm
if you get a chance to see cavuto - watch it late this evening and watch jim rogers and col. david hunt go at it over the saudis who want to take over our six seaports - i think hunt is a hotty - in EVERY way - like ben stein!
okay fern, i'm starting to miss you. am i being punished for taking a job away from home one day per week? if so, i'll quit! just kidding - hope you're off doing something funner that this.
Hey superstar!
Its been busier than heck. Some fun stuff, some not so fun, but things are going well.
Anyhow, I'd have to say that one day of work a week is entirely too much for Nanc, but dont quit on account of me.
Quit on the account of winning the lottery.
doesn't a person first have to buy a lottery ticket? i'll never win - i play the home version - just take a dollar bill and put it in the shredder!
morning to you and now i'm getting ready for work for crying out loud - this executive business is tiring...
Call in sick!!!!!!!!!! They are working you too hard...
now what am i going to do - they want to open an office just for me - what am i doing wrong? that's it - next time before i go - no brushing and i eat broccoli and oreos and smile big when i get there! perhaps wear two different shoes and put my socks on the wrong feet - what do you think? and with what?
Thats it, if you put your socks on the wrong feet they will send you home!!!
Good thinking, but take the correct safety precautions.
actually it's not that bad - i may have been overreacting - although it's not like me. i enjoy the hour and a half of butt kicking music, the scenery. your concern for me has been overwhelming and i don't know how i could have gotten through the entire two days without you - thanx for talking me down. and, i'll keep my socks on the left feet thank you.
A post-traumatic stress specialist is on his way to help you wind down.
Please remember to mix and match your socks with responsibility.
it's easy - i buy two pair every time and throw the right ones out!
